CAMBRIDGE – The men's squash team picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday night, traveling over to MIT and downing the Engineers 6-3. First-years Braden Chiulli and Sandeep Rishi both picked up their first collegiate wins in the match.
Chiulli took the courts in the third position, and won a hard fought five game match against MIT's Dominic Hansford, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 0-11, 13-11. Rishi's match also went to five games in the number six spot, with Rishi topping Bowen Baker, 7-11, 11-5, 11-3, 10-12, 11-4.
In the first position, junior tri-captain Aditya Advani made quick work of Tyler Finkelstein, winning 11-3, 11-6, 11-9. Similarly, in the ninth position, sophomore Owen Elliott had little trouble with Sarah Fay, earning the 11-8, 11-4, 11-7 win. Senior tri-captain Elliot Kardon played in the fifth position and bested Gray Riley in four games (11-9, 11-4, 3-11, 11-5). The last Jumbo win came in the eighth spot with Hugo Meggitt cruising past Aaron Zwiebach in three games (11-1, 11-3, 11-6).
Senior tri-captain Zachary Schweitzer lost a hard fought five game match in the number two position to Nikhil Punwaney, 11-13, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9. In the fourth position, sophomore Josh Lee won the first game but ended up falling to David Bian, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8. The last Engineer win came in the number seven spot, as rookie Alec Goodrich scored 23 points but fell to Thomas Cowan, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10.
MIT moves to 3-2 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday when they host Connecticut College for a 10:00 am match.
The Jumbos are now 1-1 so far this season, and have a busy weekend ahead. First up is a Friday 7:00 pm hosting of Connecticut College at the Belmont Hill School, followed by a 2:00 pm contest at Hamilton on Saturday. The Jumbos will wrap up their busy weekend on Sunday at Middlebury at 2:00 pm.
