POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Tufts men's squash team opened up their weekend with a win over Vassar on Friday night, defeating the hosts 8-1. The Jumbos won in the first through eighth positions, with the only Brewer win coming by default in the ninth position.
Freshman Braden Chiulli had one of the toughest matches of the day in the number one position, taking on Vincent Mencotti and winning in four games, 11-7, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9. Classmate Sandeep Rishi picked up another win for the Jumbos in second spot, topping Timothy Veit, 11-4, 11-2. 11-3. Taking the courts for the Jumbos in the third position was senior tri-captain Elliot Kardon. Kardon had very little trouble with his Brewer counterpart, winning in three games, 11-0, 11-1, 11-3.
In the fourth position, senior Hugo Meggitt was able to pick up a win over Noah Kulick, winning 11-1, 11-4, 11-8. Rookie John Patrick had a true battle in the fifth position, but was able to come out on top over Ryan Jurtzman, 11-9, 17-15, 11-8. Sophomore Owen Elliott won in the sixth position in three games, 11-3, 11-2, 11-7.
Sophomore Danny Fischer topped Lucas Fifter, 11-9, 11-4, 11-6, in the seventh position. The last Jumbo win came in the eighth position from sophomore Austin Brush, downing Richard Bryenton, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6. The Brewers won by default in the ninth position with no Tufts player competing.
The Jumbos move to 2-5 on the season with the win and will take the courts again on Saturday at 4:00 pm when they travel up to NESCAC rival, Colby. The match against Colby will wrap up the first semester portion of the schedule for the Jumbos.
