MIDDLETOWN, CT - Undefeated and fourth-ranked nationally Tufts (18-0) shook off a pesky Wesleyan squad to stay atop the NESCAC standing with a perfect 6-0 record after posting a 62-53 road NESCAC win here today in women's basketball action.
Ahead for Tufts is a trip to Rhode island College Tues., Feb. 4 for a non-conference battle while Wesleyan (12-7, 3-3) returns to the court Fri., Feb. 7 in NESCAC play at Trinity.
Tufts scored on four of its first six possessions, including a pair of treys, while holding Wesleyan scoreless to assume a 10-0 lead three minutes into the contest. Before the end of the half, the Cardinals narrowed the difference to just 24-22 and the teams went into intermission separated by only three points, 30-27.
Tufts scored the first six points of the second half for a 36-27 lead. The lead reached as high as 13, 51-38, with 10:25 to go. Again, Wesleyan made a run at its visitor and closed to 56-51 with 2:29 left. Wesleyan missed a pair of three-pointers on its next two possessions which could have lessened the gap to a single basket. When senior Liz Moynihan hit a trey for the Jumbos at the 1:06 mark, it locked up the victory for Tufts.
Junior Hayley Kanner got a traditional three-point play for Tufts in the final minute for the final Jumbo points as she led the team in points (13) and rebounds (10) behind her double-double. Junior Hannah Foley added 11 for the winners. Junior Kelsey Morehead had a solid all-around game running the Jumbo offense as she scored eight points, dished out six assists, grabbed five rebounds and made three steals.
Wesleyan got a career-high 22 points from senior Jenna Klaes as she went 8-for-14 from the field including 4-for-6 on three-pointers. She also had two assists, three rebounds and two steals. Junior Cherkira Lashley just missed a double-double as she had 10 points along with a team-best nine caroms.
