WILLIAMSTOWN - Six different players scored for Williams Saturday and Sean Dougherty made 22 saves as the Ephs won their third straight game, defeating Tufts University, 6-2, at Lansing Chapman Rink.
Williams improved to 13-3-2 on the season and retained the top spot in the NESCAC with the victory. Next up for the Ephs is a two-game road swing to the Nutmeg state, beginning with Wesleyan Friday night at 7 p.m.
Tufts fell to 3-15-0 with the loss. The Jumbos host Connecticut College in NESCAC action next Friday night at 7 pm.
"It goes to show you how tough our league is," Ephs' head coach Bill Kangas said. "Everybody is good. We had a tough game last night (Conn. College) and I thought Tufts came out and played very well today. We're happy to get out of this weekend with four points."
The Ephs got off to a strong start Saturday, taking a 1-0 lead in the first period when Tyler Young converted a power-play opportunity with a close-range shot that beat Tufts goalie Greg Jenkins. The Jumbos responded with a power-play goal of their own 1:02 into the second period when a pass rolled through the Ephs crease and Luke Griffin pounced on it and buried it in the back of the goal.
It took Williams only nine second to regain the lead however as Williams won the face-off, skated in Tufts zone and Matt Werner beat Jenkins with a wrist shot. The Ephs made it 3-1 just over 11 minutes later when Sam Gray and George Hunkele worked a beautiful give and go that began in the neutral zone and ended when Hunkele lifted a shot past Jenkins' blocker side. Zander Masucci made it 4-1 with an unassisted tally, but Tufts countered on a goal just before the second period ended as Sean Kavanagh scored from the high slot.
That was enough to keep the game interesting until the 4:39 mark of the third period, when the Ephs' Frankie Mork slapped a shot from the left point that Alex DeBaere re-directed past Jenkins from the mid-slot area into the bottom right corner of the goal for a 5-2 lead. Paul Steinig finished off the scoring at the 11:13 mark. It was the second Ephs' power-play goal of the game, and their third in two days.
Williams held a 44-24 shot advantage in the game, with Jenkins finishing with 38 saves and Dougherty 22 for the Ephs.
