MEDFORD - Tufts University's undefeated season came to an end Tuesday night at Cousens Gym as Babson College overcame a 19-point halftime deficit to beat the Jumbos 58-52 in non-league women's basketball Tuesday night.
The Beavers were led by Linnett Graber who scored 16 points and added seven rebounds and Giovanna Pickering who finished with 16 points and pulled down eight boards. Liz Moynihan (Storrs, CT) led the home team with 13 points in the losing effort.
The Jumbos fall to 21-1. With the win, the Beavers improve to 12-10.
Junior Hannah Foley (Acton, MA) posted six points and seven rebounds, while first-year Michela North (Duxbury, MA) came off the bench to finish with eights points and five boards.
The Jumbos jumped ahead of Babson, 12-2, at the 13:06 mark following a trey and layup from Moynihan, as the Jumbos forced 13 first-half turnovers. Morehead drove the length of the court with five seconds left in the first half to beat the buzzer with a layup to give her team a 32-13 lead at the break.
The Beavers came out a different team as they started the half on a 14-1 run for a 33-27 score at the 14:07 mark. They continued to chip away at the lead and found themselves in a 42-42 tie when Graber made a layup with 5:47 remaining in the second half. On their next possession, Babson had their first lead on a layup by McKenna Cudgma.
Moynihan's three-pointer trimmed the Beaver lead to 50-47, but the Jumbos were unable to come any closer as game ended with a final score of 58-52. Babson was clutch at the free throw line down the stretch, particularly Pickering.
For the game, the Jumbos shot 30 percent (15-for-50) from the field. The Beavers were hot in the second-half shooting 73.7 percent (14-for-19) and 52.6 percent for the game (20-for-38).
Babson outrebounded the Jumbos 34-24.
