WATERVILLE, Me. - After both teams hit posts and crossbars during the contest, Tufts University scored with just 4:47 left in the game to pull out a 1-0 victory over Colby College in NESCAC men's soccer Saturday.

Freshman Matt Zinner set up the game-winning goal

Junior Rui Pinheiro got the game-winning tally, but freshman Matt Zinner did much of the work. Zinner beat a defender on the right side, used his speed and made a low centering cross to Pinherio, who one-timed the shot into the back of the net.

The goal was just the second of Pinheiro's Jumbo career, but both have been NESCAC game-winners. He had the lone goal in Tufts' 1-0 victory over Middlebury last October 5. The assist was the first collegiate point earned by Zinner, a back out of Raleigh, N.C.

The game seemed destined for overtimes after five unlucky near-misses during regulation. Tufts (4-0 overall, 2-0 NESCAC) hit the goal post three times and the crossbar once during the contest. Colby (2-2, 0-2 NESCAC) hit one crossbar in the second half.

The shutout was the third in four games for the Jumbos, and the second by sophomore goalkeeper Scott Greenwood. He had three saves in 90 minutes. That's the same amount as Colby goalie Peter Quayle finished with.

Tufts controlled possession for the majority of the afternoon and had a 19-6 shot advantage and a 10-0 margin in corner kicks. Head Coach Josh Shapiro's team has outscored the opposition 17-1 through four games this fall.

The Jumbos are one of just three undefeated teams in NESCAC after one week of conference play, and they face one of the others when they host the Wesleyan Cardinals on Wednesday at Kraft Field. Williams is the other. Colby hosts Maine-Farmington under the lights on Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
