Jumbos Fall to Standford and University of Virginia on Opening Day

Aidan Porgest won in his first collegiate match against Stanford.

CAMBRIDGE – The Tufts men's squash team opened up their season on Friday afternoon, taking on Stanford and the University of Virginia.  Four different Jumbos picked up wins against Stanford, but the Jumbos lost a close 5-4 battle with the Cardinal and then fell to the University of Virginia.

The Jumbos are 0-2 this season, but will have plenty of opportunities to change that this weekend as they have two more matches scheduled for Saturday and then another on Sunday.

In the 5-4 loss to Stanford, the Jumbos got wins in the second, third, fifth and eighth positions.  Sophomore Braden Chiulli won a hard fought battle in the second position against his Standford counterpart, Parker Odrich, winning 11-8, 9-11, 12-14, 13-11, 11-5. In the third position, rookie Alan Litman picked up a win in his first collegiate match, topping Matthew Stevens, 11-4, 13-11, 4-11, 10-12, 11-7.

Freshman Aidan Porges also picked up a win in his first collegiate match, playing in the fifth position and beating his Cardinal counterpart, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10. The last Jumbo win came in the eighth position, as rookie Brett Raskopf only needed three games to pick up his first collegiate win, downing Matthew Stewart, 13-11, 11-9, 11-9.

In the first position, senior Aditya Advani fell in three games to Yousef Hindy.  Rookie Cameron Ewan took his Cardinal counterpart to five games in the fourth position, but ended up falling, 4-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-2, 11-8.  Sophomore Sandeep Rishi also took his match in the sixth position to five games, but ended up being edged by Matthew Bernstein, 10-12, 5-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5.

In the seventh position, Imran Trehan also forced his match with Matthew Bernstein to five games, but fell, 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8.  Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was sophomore Alexander Goodrich in the ninth position, but he fell in four games to Vihan Khanna, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8, 12-10.

Following the match with the Cardinals, the Jumbos took on the University of Virginia, but fell to the Cavaliers, 9-0.  In the second position, Litman forced four games with Mason Blake, but fell 11-4, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8.  Also forcing four games was Alexander Goodrich in the sixth position, but James Dudzik won 11-4, 11-4, 9-11, 11-6.

Chuilli fell in the first position to Jarett Odrich in three games.  Taking the court in the third position was Ewan, who was beaten by the Cavalier's Charles Woodworth.  Porges faced off with Grayson Bubrosky in the fourth position and scored 22 points across the three games.  Trehan fell in the fifth position in three games to Stewart Staunton.  Rookie Matthew Memmo played in the seventh position, sophomore John Patrick in the eighth and junior co-captain Daniel Fischer in the ninth.

The Jumbos will have little time to rest as they will be right back in action on Saturday when they take on Boston University and Bryant.  Both matches will be played at the Belmont Hill school.
