WATERVILLE, ME - The Tufts hockey team scored three goals in a 1:10 span during the second period and earned a 4-1 NESCAC victory at Colby College on Friday night. The win clinches a spot in the upcoming NESCAC Championship tournament for the Jumbos.
Tufts moves to 8-13-2 overall and 5-10-3, while the Mules drop to 5-15-3 and 2-12-3. Tufts plays at Bowdoin College on Saturday at 4 pm to finish the regular season. The Mules, who are eliminated from the playoffs, will entertain Connecticut College at 3 pm.
The Jumbos will be the eighth seed in the conference tournament and will play at top seed Trinity College in the quarterfinals on Saturday, February 28.
Tonight, Colby took a 1-0 lead just 1:59 into the second period on Tyler Lingel's first goal of the season. Dan Dupont had the assist on the play, his fourth of the year.
Neither team had an edge in play when Tufts suddenly broke the game open with three goals. Bill Sellers scored his second of the season on a transition goal at 11:41, with assists from Mike Leary and Brian Ouellette.
The Jumbos scored the game-winning goal just 13 seconds later on Stewart Bell's sixth of the year. Tyler Voigt had his 11th assist and Conal Lynch his seventh for the Jumbos. Bell, alone in front of the goal, had to reach for a pass and then ripped a shot.
With Tufts skating with confidence, Matt Pugh made it three goals in 1:10 with his seventh of the year at 12:51. Scott Majkowski and Brian Brown had assists on the play.
Brown closed out the scoring and got an insurance goal with 5:20 gone in the third period. Majkowski had his second assist of the game and Mike Leary added his fourth
Mason Pulde had 32 saves, including 18 in the third period, for the Jumbos. Sam Parker stopped 22 for the Mules.
