HARTFORD, Conn. – The Tufts men's squash team fell in semifinal play of the Conroy Cup of the College Squash Association's Team Championships on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos faced off with Hamilton for the third time this year, but were not able to defeat the Continentals, falling 6-3.
The Jumbos will now take on Stanford in a consolation match on Sunday at 11:00 am. Play in the CSA's Team Championships wraps up the Jumbos schedule this season.
The Jumbos received wins in the first three positions on Saturday against Hamilton. Junior tri-captain Aditya Advani needed four games but was able to top Edward Black in the first position, 11-5, 11-5, 6-11, 13-11. In the second spot, senior Zach Schweitzer fell in the first game, but came back to beat Josh Wolpert in four games, 6-11, 11-2, 11-4, 11-8. The last Jumbo win came in the third spot from freshman Braden Chiulli who needed just three games to take care of Mac Pivirotto (11-9, 11-8, 11-7).
There were several Jumbos who played very close matches, but just weren't able to edge their Hamilton counterparts. Sophomore Owen Elliott took the courts in the ninth position and traded games with Jonathan Ruth. Ruth was able to earn the five game win for the Continentals, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 5-11, 11-3. Playing in the fifth position, senior tri-captain Elliot Kardon won the first game, but then fell to Peter Harrison, 8-11. 11-4, 11-9, 11-6. Similarly, in the sixth position, junior Brandon Weiss pushed his match to four games, but fell to David Laub, 11-6, 10-12, 11-2, 11-8.
Rookie Sandeep Rishi took the courts in the fourth position, but fell in three games to Marc Dudzik, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7. In the seventh position, senior tri-captain Hugo Meggitt wasn't able to top Walker Lourie, losing 11-9, 11-5, 11-7. Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was freshman Alex Goodrich in the eighth position, who was bested in three games by Ted Nehrbas (11-9, 11-5, 11-1).
The match between Tufts and Stanford is scheduled for 11:00 am on Sunday and will conclude play in the CSA Team Championships for the Jumbos. The winner of the match will also finish 27th in the rankings. The Jumbos entered the Championships as the 28th ranked team.
