SOMERVILLE, Mass. - Recording two goals in a three minute span in the first half, the Tufts men's soccer team held on to beat Colby College on Saturday, 2-0. Following a win at Endicott earlier in the week to open up the 2015 season, the Jumbos started out their home slate with a shutout of the Mules, their first of 10 conference matches this year.
Tufts (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) got the scoring started in the 17th minute when senior Rui Pinheiro sent a pass to the middle of the box from the left side to junior Nathan Majumder, who headed it in for his first goal of the season.
Just two and a half minutes later, with another quick position for the Jumbos down field, senior Connor Brown scored his first of the year off of a pass from senior Monil Patel.
Those two goals would be all that Tufts needed to claim victory, as junior Scott Greenwood posted the shutout in net for the Jumbos, tacking on one save while playing all 90 minutes.
Junior Gaston Becherano added three shots on goal for Tufts, who took 12 total shots in the contest.
Colby (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) took five total shots as a team over the course of the match, and was held without a shot on goal in the second half. John Pappas made three saves in goal for the Mules, playing all 90 minutes in net for the opposition.
The Jumbos take to the road tomorrow, Sept. 13, as they play their second non-conference game away from home at Plymouth State at 4 pm. Tufts returns home next Saturday, Sept. 19, to take on Connecticut Coll. at 2:30 as they continue NESCAC play.
