BELMONT – The No. 27 Tufts men's squash team topped Boston College, 8-1, to open their season on Friday night at the Belmont Hill School. The Jumbos won in the first eight positions to pick up their first win of the 2016-17 season.
With the win the Jumbos move to 1-0 on the season. The match is the first of four this weekend for the Jumbos. They will battle Colby on Saturday and then take on Bryant and Brandeis on Sunday.
The Jumbos had a new face in the number one spot, as rookie Raghav Kumar picked up a hard fought five game win in the first position, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 10-12, 11-4. In the second position sophomore Brett Raskopf picked up a three game win over 11-4, 11-3, 11-5. In the third position freshman Connor Wind picked up his first collegiate win in the third position with a 11-6, 11-7, 11-3.
In the fourth position, sophomore Aidan Porgest was able to down James Stevenson in three games, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5. Another new face picked up his first collegiate win in the fifth position as Frank Yandrisevits needed just three games to beat Robbie Fischer, 11-3, 11-4, 11-8. Classmate Amun Sahrawat also notched his first collegiate win with an 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 win over Colton Hardman.
Sophomore Matt Memmo had a real battle in the seventh position, needed five games, two of which went to extra points, to beat Christopher Tozzi, 10-12, 12-10, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9. Junior John Patrick won in three games in the eighth position to beat Elliott O'Brien, 11-5, 11-4, 11-3.
Jumbo rookie Siddharth Jejurikar took the courts in the ninth position, but Boston College's Tyler O'Neill was able to win in three games, 11-5, 11-3, 11-9.
The Jumbos are back in action on Saturday with a 6:30 pm match at MIT with Colby.
