CLINTON, N.Y. – The No. 23 Tufts men's squash team split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon, topping NYU, 7-2, but falling to No. 28 Hamilton, 6-3. The matches are the first two of a busy weekend for the Jumbos as they have two more on the schedule for Sunday.
With the split the Jumbos move to 5-1 this year, as the setback was their first of the season.
The Jumbos opened the day with the duel against Hamilton, and they were able to win in the fifth, sixth and eighth positions against the Continentals. Junior Braden Chiulli won in the fifth position for the Jumbos, topping Sam Matlick in five games, 4-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-13, 11-8. Sophomore Aidan Porges notched another win for the Jumbos in the sixth position with a 11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 12-10 win over Nicholas Conzelman. The last Jumbo win came in the eighth position as sophomore Imran Trehan picked up a 11-3, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7 win over Jordan Ruth.
Sophomore Alan Litman took the courts in the first position but fell to Colin O'Dowd in four games, 11-5, 7-11, 12-10, 11-8. Junior Brett Raskopf also lost a four game battle for the Jumbos in the third position and freshman Connor Wind fell in four games in the fourth position. Junior Sandeep Rishi was topped in four games in the seventh position. Freshman Frank Yandrisevits played a tight one in the ninth position, but Atticus Jones was able to win in five games, 11-8, 9-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-5. Freshman Raghav Kumar rounded out the Jumbos lineup, taking the courts in the second position.
The Jumbos did bounce back from the loss though, and topped NYU 7-2 in their second match of the day. Tufts was able to pick up wins in the third through ninth positions against the Violets.
Raskopf picked up a three game win in the third position, but the first game was quite the duel, 17-15, 11-7, 11-8. In the second position Wind topped Tae Hun Kang in three games, 11-7, 11-9, 11-0. Chiulli won in the fifth position for the Jumbos, topping Luca Diadul, 12-10, 11-4, 11-3. Porges picked up a win for the Jumbos in the sixth position, beating Ashish Ramachandran, 11-5, 11-6, 12-10.
In the seventh position, Trehan won over Jason Choi, 11-3, 11-3, 11-4. The first game in the eighth position went to extra points, but Yandrisevits was still able to pick up a three game win, 13-11, 11-5, 11-7. Rounding out the Jumbos lineup was freshman Amun Sahrawat, picking up a three game win in the ninth position, 12-10, 11-6, 11-5. Litman and Kumar took the courts in the first and second positions, respectively, but both fell to their Violet counterparts.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Sunday, as they travel to Vassar to take on Bard at 12:30 pm and Vassar at 2 pm. This weekend of play wraps up the first semester of play for the Jumbos.
