NEW HAVEN, CT - The Tufts University Men's Squash team steamrolled Lehigh, 9-0, in the opening match of Chaffee Cup play at the 2016 College Squash Association Team Championships Friday at Yale.
The eight-team Chaffee Cup includes the 33rd through 40th ranked teams in the nation. Tufts (#33) is the top seed in the division while #40 Lehigh is the eighth seed.
The Jumbos won eight matches in straight games and earned the final win by default as Lehigh did not have a player in the ninth spot.
Sophomore Braden Chiulli won the #1 match for the Jumbos by 11-3, 11-2, 11-5 scores over Lehigh's Max Liu. Jumbos were similarly successful in the second through fifth spots. Freshman Brett Raskopf allowed just eight points in his 11-3, 11-1, 11-4 victory at #5, while freshman Imran Trehan was an 11-4, 11-0, 11-5 winner at #4.
Freshman Matt Memmo played in the most competitive match for the Jumbos, winning 11-5, 11-6, 12-10 over Lehigh's Alec Shimell in the seventh spot.
Tufts improved to 12-9 with their third consecutive win. They will face NYU in the winner's bracket on Saturday at 5:30 pm. This Chaffee Cup semi-final will be played at Wesleyan. NYU is the fourth seed in the division, #36 overall. They defeated fifth-seed and #37 Georgetown 7-2 on Friday.
Lehigh, which dropped to 3-7 with the loss to Tufts, moves into the consolation bracket where they will play Georgetown on Saturday at Wesleyan. Game time is 9 am.
