HARTFORD, Conn. – The ninth seeded Tufts men's squash team opened up play in the NESCAC Championship on Friday afternoon, taking on eighth seeded Amherst but falling to the Purple and White in the opening round of play, 9-0. The Jumbos will now play in the consolation bracket of the tournament.
With the loss the Jumbos move to 7-6 on the season and will now face off with Connecticut College and Hamilton on Saturday in the consolation round of the tournament at Wesleyan. The Jumbos play Connecticut College at 10 am and then take on Hamilton at 12:15 pm.
Sophomore Braden Chiulli took the courts in the first spot for the Jumbos, but the Purple and White's Noah Browne won in three games. In the second position, freshman Alan Litman fell in three games to Cameron Bahadori. Classmate Cameron Ewan took the courts in the third position, but Amherst's David Merkel needed just three games to get a win.
In the fourth position, freshman Aidan Porges faced off with Harith Khawaja, but the Purple and White were able to win in this position. Rookie Brett Raskopf played the closet match of the day in the fifth position, taking the first game from Darian Ehsani, but then falling in four games. Classmate Imran Trehan took on Michael Groot of Amherst in the sixth position, but Trehan was not able to come out with a win.
Sophomore Sandeep Rishi faced off with Lucas Sheiner in the seventh position, but fell in three games. Classmate Alec Goodrich fell in three games to Jeremy Van in eighth position. Rookie Matt Memmo rounded out the Jumbos lineup, but was topped by Thornton Ellis in the ninth position.
The Jumbos will have a busy Saturday, but play two teams they have previously beaten this season. NESCAC Championship play concludes on Sunday.
