MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Tufts University men's squash team lost a tightly-contested 6-3 match at Wesleyan University in NESCAC action Friday afternoon. The Jumbo were playing their first contest of 2017.
Tufts, ranked 25th by the College Squash Association, dropped to 7-2 overall. Wesleyan, #23 in the national poll, evened their record at 3-3. Five of the nine matches went at least four games, and three of the four that finished in three were hard-fought results.
Wesleyan's Yahya Ladiwala defeated Tufts sophomore Cameron Ewan in five games at #6. Ladiwala was up 2-0 before Ewan evened the match with 11-5 and 16-14 victories. The Cardinal took the fifth and decisive game 11-9. The fourth contest also went the distance, with Wesleyan's Alex Kamisher overcoming a 2-1 deficit to defeat Tufts freshman Raghav Kumar 11-13, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 14-12.
At #1, Tufts sophomore Alan Litman had a 1-0 lead before Wesleyan's Christopher Hart came back with 11-6, 11-5, 11-3 wins to take the match. Similarly, Jumbo junior Braden Chiulli was up a game before Cardinal Zach Roach rallied for 12-10, 11-3, 11-4 wins in the third match. Jumbo Sandeep Rishi and Cardinal Kevin Lee were tied 1-1 at #9 before the Tufts player won 11-6 and 11-8 for the match.
The best three-game sets were at #5 and #8. Wesleyan's Grant Lounsbury won 11-9, 11-7, 13-11 against Jumbo freshman Connor Wind, while Tufts' Imran Trehan defeated Alex Dreyfus 11-7, 11-8, 14-12.
Tufts will play Haverford in a match at Wesleyan also on Friday afternoon. Wesleyan will also play Haverford as part of the tri-match later in the day.
