Women's Basketball Falls to Bowdoin on the Road Despite Double-Double from DeCandido

Box Score

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University women's basketball team lost just its second game of the season today against fellow New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Bowdoin College.

DeCandido recorded her second double-double of the season in the loss.

The Jumbos (11-2, 1-1 NESCAC) and Polar Bears (13-0, 2-0 NESCAC) were both playing their second game in as many days. Tufts beat Colby last night, while Bowdoin took care of Bates at home.

Erica DeCandido led the Jumbos again with her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, as well as four assists and two blocks. Emily Briggs contributed 11 points and five rebounds and Katie Martensen had seven points.

Four of the five Tufts starters picked up at least four fouls throughout the game, which made it tough. At half, the score was 35-30 in favor of the Polar Bears. DeCandido had nine of her 16 in the first half and Briggs had six of her 11.

The third quarter wasn't exactly a high-scoring affair, with both teams combining for only 18 points. They would begin the final frame with Bowdoin up, 45-38.

The Jumbos were able to cut the deficit to five with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. DeCandido made a layup off of a feed from Briggs, followed by a successful three-point try by Sadie Otley. On the next possession, Otley was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws to bring the score to 44-49, but that's as close as they would get.

Kate Kerrigan and Lauren Petit did a nice job closing the game out for the Polar Bears. They each had eight and seven points respectively in the final quarter. Petit led all scorers with 20 points.

Both Melissa Baptista and Jac Knapp got in early foul trouble, which limited their minutes and kept them from putting up their usual big numbers. Baptista still managed two rebounds and two blocks, while Knapp had six points and a steal.

The Jumbos will play their fifth and final game of their current road trip on Monday at 12 p.m. at Worcester State. Bowdoin, on the other hand, will play their first away game after four consecutive home contests this Tuesday at New England College.
