Will Dewire battled to a five-game win in the fifth match |
WILLIAMSTOWN – Freshmen Marco Rodriguez and Will Dewire won matches, but the Tufts University men's squash team dropped a NESCAC match 7-2 at Williams College on Sunday.
The #21 Ephs got the better of the #23 Jumbos as Williams improved to a 3-3 record while Tufts dropped to 2-3.
Dewire went five games to win a hard-fought #5 match over A.J. Solecki. The Jumbo rookie won the second and third games to take a 2-1 lead, but Solecki responded with a fourth-game victory. Dewire prevailed in the fifth. Game scores were 5-11, 11-8, 12-10, 6-11, 11-8.
Rodriguez won his #2 match against Williams' Jacob Bassil by default. He trailed 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 before the Eph player had to retire.
Each of the Ephs' seven victories were in three games, but many were close. Eph Ben Eisenberg won 11-8, 11-8, 11-6 over Jumbo Salik Awan in the seventh match. Three Jumbos won 19 total games in their matches, including senior Alan Litman at #3 (11-5, 11-7, 11-7).
The most decisive victory for the Ephs was at #4 where William Means was victorious 11-1, 11-4, 12-10.
Head coach Joe Raho's Jumbos play at #22 MIT on Wednesday at 4 pm. Williams is finished for the semester and will return to action on January 5 at Middlebury.
