BRUNSWICK, Maine – In an incredibly tight match that saw four contests go five games and two others go to four, the Bowdoin College men's squash team defeated visiting Tufts 5-4 today.
The match was the last of the fall semester for both teams. Bowdoin, ranked 26th, earned its first win of the year (1-2), while #23 Tufts lost for the fifth straight match dropping to 2-5.
The Polar Bears won three of the four matches that went to five games. In the #1 match, Tufts junior Raghav Kumar and Bowdoin's Ian Squiers went back-and-forth before Squiers won 2-11, 11-4, 11-9, 2-11, 11-8. Similarly at #3, Polar Bear Satya Butler won 8-11, 11-3, 11-3, 9-11, 11-8 against Tufts freshman Marco Rodriguez.
The hosts took the fourth match in five games as well. Tufts senior Alan Litman led 11-8 and 11-4 before the host's Carson Claar rallied for 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 wins to take the match.
Freshman Will Dewire stayed hot for the Tufts, earning the lone Jumbo five-game win. He defeated Bowdoin's Adham Sobhy 9-11, 11-4, 9-11, 14-12, 11-7 in the sixth match. The victory was Dewire's team-high fifth of the season.
The teams split the four-game matches. Jumbo freshman Konrad LaDow won his first career match at #2 over Bowdoin's Gannon Leech 7-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-9. In the seventh match, Polar Bear John Milligan defeated Jumbo junior Connor Wind 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8.
Tufts senior co-captain Brett Raskopf had the easiest win of the day with an 11-4, 11-2, 11-3 win over his opponent in the ninth match. The victory was his fourth of the season against three losses. Sophomore Salik Awan, who also won today, has a 4-3 record as well.
The Jumbos will return to action on January 7 with a tri-match at Yale with McGill. Bowdoin resumes its season hosting Wesleyan on January 9.
