Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. – Tufts scored four unearned runs in the fifth inning and freshmen pitchers Kristi Van Meter and Cassie Cancemi limited the University of Wisconsin Superior (UWS) to one run as the Jumbo softball team took a 4-1 win over the Yellowjackets Wednesday night.
Van Meter earned her third win of the week, starting and going six innings allowing five hits and one run with eight strikeouts. Cancemi, making the first appearance of her career, got the Yellowjackets in order in the seventh including two strikeouts for a save.
UWS had scored in their first at bat. With one out, Maggie Cragg singled and then stole second. She scored on a two-out base hit by Katie White.
From there, Van Meter allowed just two singles from the second through fifth innings. The Yellowjackets got the first two batters on in the sixth, but Van Meter finished her outing by getting three in a row with two K's and a ground ball back at her.
Macy Hanson was equally impressive in the circle for UWS, taking a hard-luck loss going seven innings allowing six hits and no earned runs.
In the Jumbo fifth, sophomore 1B Casey Maggiore led off with a double. Back-to-back errors and a passed ball by the Yellowjackets allowed Maggiore to score to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman CF Emma Della Volpe brought home another run with a ground ball to short. Junior LF Kristen Caporelli squeezed home the third run, and then scored the fourth darting home from third when a foul pop-up was chased by the pitcher and catcher leaving the plate uncovered after the ball was caught.
Senior 2B Sara Willner-Giwerc was 2 for 4 with a run at the top of the Tufts line-up. Cragg had two hits for UWS.
The Jumbos (6-2) play games against Maryville (Tenn.) and Wisconsin-Whitewater on Thursday. The Yellowjackets (4-10) are off on Thursday and return to play Carroll (Wis.) and Maryville Friday.
