MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Tufts University men's squash team opened the 2019-20 season with a 7-2 victory at NESCAC foe Wesleyan University on Saturday.
A five-game win by senior co-captain Raghav Kumar spurred the Jumbos, who entered the season ranked #23 by the College Squash Association and defeated the #29 Cardinals. Kumar went back and forth with Wesleyan's John Sutherby before winning the #2 match 4-11, 11-8, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8.
Jumbo freshman Sanjeev Jeyabalan debuted with a four-set win in the fourth match, coming back after losing the first game to defeat Cardinal William Bienstock 7-11, 11-9, 11-1, 11-8.
Tufts' others five wins were all in straight games. Freshman Vivaan Jaikishan won most convincingly with 11-3, 11-4, 11-4 scores against Andrew Doucette at #6. Sophomore Dillon O'Shea won the third game of his #7 match 11-4 after working hard for 11-9 and 11-8 earlier victories.
Wesleyan's Shanay Sanghavi went five to defeat Jumbo sophomore Marco Rodriguez after being down two games, 6-11, 10-12, 12-10, 11-7, 11-7 in the third match. The hosts also won the #1 match with Sean Choi besting Jumbo freshman Kunal Valia 14-12, 11-6, 11-4.
Tufts returns to action next Saturay and Franklin & Marshall. Wesleyan hosts Bowdoin on November 24.
