CAMBRIDGE – The Tufts University men's squash team posted an exciting 5-4 victory over Bowdoin College in a NESCAC match played at Harvard University Saturday afternoon.
The match-clinching victory came at #4 where freshman Sanjeev Jeyabalan won 11-3, 9-11 11-7, 11-2 against Carson Claar.
The Jumbos, ranked 22nd nationally, evened their record at 2-2 in their final match of the fall semester. The loss was the first of the season for Bowdoin (4-1), the #24 ranked team.
Tufts took the top two matches as freshman Kunal Valia defeated Bowdoin's Deven Kanwal in four sets at #1 (11-2, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8), and Jumbo senior co-captain Raghav Kumar was also a four-set winner against John Milligan in the second match. He came back from down a set to win 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.
Four of Tufts' five wins were in four or five sets. The longest match of the day was at #6 where Tufts freshman Vivaan Jaikishan won in five after losing two of the first three (9-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7) against Henry Somerby.
The Jumbos' lone three-set win was at #9 where sophomore Will Dewire posted an 11-6, 12-10, 11-6 triumph against Edwardo Perez from Bowdoin.
Three of the Jumbos' four losses came in four sets. Of the four, sophomore Dillon O'Shea scored the most points in his #7 setback against Gannon Leech 11-9, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10.
Head coach Joe Raho's Jumbos are off until they travel to play at Stanford on January 8. Bowdoin had a match at Northeastern after their contest against Tufts today.
