NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Tufts University men's squash team was defeated 9-0 by Williams College in the quarterfinal round of the Summers Cup at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Nationals hosted by Yale on Friday morning.
The Ephs (15-10) advance to the Summers Cup semi-finals where they will play MIT tomorrow at 8:30 am. The Engineers defeated Bates 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The Jumbos (7-11) drop into the consolation bracket and will also play on Saturday at 8:30 am against Bates at Yale.
The Summers Cup is an eight-team bracket consisting of the 17th through 24th ranked teams at the CSA Championships. Williams is 17th and the #1 seed in the Summers bracket, while Tufts is 24th and the eighth and final seed in Summers Cup play.
Tufts lost its #1 player Raghav Kumar due to an injury earlier in the week and had to play the match with everyone moving up a spot. Williams posted seven of their nine wins in three games, while one went five games and another was four.
In the five-game match at #2, Tufts senior Alan Litman went toe-to-toe with Williams' Wyatt Khosrowshahi before the Eph prevailed 13-11, 8-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9. At #4, Jumbo freshman Dillon O'Shea won the first game 11-9 before Williams' Jacob Bassil ran off three consecutive wins 11-8, 11-3, 12-10 to take the match.
Tufts freshman Will Dewire lost a close three-game match of 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 in the third match. Jumbo senior co-captain Aidan Porges lost 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 in the seventh match.
In the #1 match, John Fitzgerald won for the Ephs 11-2, 11-3, 11-3, whle Williams also had a quick 11-1, 11-7, 11-3 win at #9.
Tufts is playing in the Summers Cup division for the first time since 2010.
