Jacobs Tallies Men's Soccer OT Game-Winner to Down Bates, 1-0

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine – Junior Max Jacobs tallied the lone goal as #1 Tufts University downed Bates in a double overtime thriller at Russell Street Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Brett Rojas led all players with five shots.

The Jumbos improve to 7-0-0 on the season with a 3-0-0 record in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play. The Bobcats fall to 5-2-1 with a 1-2-1 record in NESCAC contests.

In double overtime, senior Joe Braun got the ball on the outside of the box and fired a shot that was blocked with a slide tackle by a Bates defender. The ball bounced right to Jacobs, who did a nice job trapping it. He dribbled once to his right and delivered a shot that found the upper-right corner of the net, winning the match for the Jumbos.

Bates' best opportunity to score came early in the second half, when the Bobcats earned multiple corner kicks. A Frederick Hohmann header was blocked in the 51st minute and Max McKersie's shot hit the crossbar in the 62nd minute off a Hohmann free kick.

The Jumbos recorded two shots in the first overtime period, with senior Tanner Jameson's header attempt going high in the 96th minute and junior Travis Van Brewer getting denied by Blaise Marceau, as he blocked the shot attempt, in the 98th minute. Bates did not record a shot in either overtime period.

Tufts outshot the Bobcats 19-5 overall. Six of the shots for the Jumbos were on frame while the Bobcats did not register one on goal. The Jumbos earned 11 corner kicks to Bates' six.

Junior Will Harned did not face a shot on goal in the winning effort. He improves to 7-0-0. His counterpart, David Goodstein, made five saves on six shots on goal in the contest.

The Jumbos return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Wesleyan for a NESCAC matchup at 7:30 pm. Bates is back in action next Saturday when they host Middlebury at 2pm.
