CAMBRIDGE - The Tufts University men's squash team was defeated by Amherst College in a battle for seventh place in the Summers Cup of the College Squash Association Championships on Sunday. Playing for an opportunity to finish #23 in the nation, the highest finish for the Jumbos since 2010, Tufts pushed hard but ultimately came up short in the 5-4 loss to the Mammoths.
The Jumbos finish the season with a 7-14 overall record and are 1-2 versus Amherst this season. The Mammoths improve to their record to 9-10 after today's win.
Sophomore Dillon O'Shea continued his hot streak for the Jumbos when he picked up a three game win and finished the weekend with a 3-0 record. Playing in the seventh position this afternoon he defeated Amherst's Reginald Brewster with scores of 12-10, 11-6, 11-6. Senior Raghav Kumar also picked up a win for the Jumbos after being pushed to the limits in a five game battle in the second slot. Kumar started off strong with an 11-3 victory in set one, but dropped set two and set three before bouncing back to win the remaining sets in close games. At #4, sophomore Konrad LaDow cruised to a victory in straight sets with scores of 11-4, 11-5, 11-5. In the sixth slot sophomore Marco Rodriguez won a challenging four set game 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6.
Freshmen Kunal Valia and Sanjeev Jeyabalan fought hard and forced extra sets before dropping matches in the first and third position, respectively. Valia was defeated in four sets with scores of 8-11, 15-13, 11-6, 12-10 and Jeyabalan was edged by Adam Lichtmacher in a tight five set match with scores of 11-7, 4-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9. Freshman Vivaan Jaikishan played a competitive match at #5 but was unable to push Amherst's Terrence Wang into extra sets as he was defeated 12-10, 11-9, 11-6. Junior Salik Awan was also swept with scores of 12-10, 11-9,11-6 in the seventh position. Rounding out the Jumbos line up in the ninth position Senior Connor Wind dropped a close four game match 11-2, 5-11, 12-10, 11-8.
The Jumbos finish the season as the No. 24 ranked team while the Mammoths will finish as the No. 23 ranked team.
