Aroh Tallies Twice as Men's Soccer Tops Hamilton 3-0

Box Score

Calvin Aroh MEDFORD - In their eighth win of the season, the Jumbo men's soccer took down Hamilton College in a 3-0 NESCAC victory Sunday at Bello Field. Senior defensive midfielder Calvin Aroh (pictured) secured a brace, which places him second behind forward Mati Cano as the team's top goal scorer. The other goal came from midfielder Travis Van Brewer.

After beating Bates on Saturday in an intense 2-0 game, the Jumbos picked up where they left off by dominating possession and sending through balls to the wingers who put in crosses. At the 12th minute mark, Tufts got their first goal in exactly that matter when defender Gibson Campbell was given open space to attack the left side of the field as Hamilton played in a compact formation. Campbell sped down the pitch and was eyeing the box where he saw a couple blue shirts and sent in a high cross that went straight to the large frame of Aroh, who smashed a volley with left foot into the top left corner.

The Jumbos sensed the early momentum and kept attacking by stringing together successive passes in Hamilton's half. About 16 minutes in, midfielder Ethan Feigin received the ball at the top of the box and passed out wide to forward Sean Traynor who took a difficult shot with his left foot that Hamilton goalie Ben Ziegler deflected. The rebound went to a nearby midfielder Travis Van Brewer who struck at the rebound only to have the goalie block the ball back to Van Brewer again, who finished it on a volley with his left foot. Up two goals, the Jumbos went into halftime with good spirits.

Hamilton came out in the second half with higher on-ball pressure from their players and an uptick in aggression. As the game played out, the competitive atmosphere got heated as Hamilton midfielder Sam Dills earned a yellow card. The aggressiveness continued as the teams exchanged retaliatory fouls, and another yellow card was shown, this time to Traynor in the 66th minute.

The visiting Continentals played with more fire in the second half, but it was not enough for a goal. Meanwhile, Aroh cashed in his second goal of the game in the 72nd minute on an assist from Cano, who received the ball on the left side of the box and found a running Aroh who easily placed the ball in the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Jumbos had nine shots and committed 15 fouls while the Continentals had five shots and committed 15 fouls. Jumbo freshman keeper Eric Lauta needed to make one save in goal for another shutout, his fifth of the year. Ben Ziegler started in goal for Hamilton and played 84 minutes making two stops before he was relieved by Surya Mani (one save).

Tufts (8-0-1, 4-0-1 NESCAC) finished their home weekend with two conference wins, and they will travel to Trinity next Saturday for another conference matchup. Hamilton (2-6-1, 0-6-0) will try and turn their season around starting against SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday.
