Colby Shuts Out Men's Hockey in NESCAC Game 4-0

Box Score

Josh Sarlo MALDEN – Visiting Colby College put together a strong and balanced performance for a 4-0 NESCAC men's hockey victory at Tufts on Friday night at Valley Forum.

The Mules (3-2, 2-1 NESCAC) scored a power play goal, a short-handed goal and two even-strength goals while sophomore goalie Andy Beran and the Colby defense earned a shutout.

Tufts took a penalty just 14 seconds into the opening period and Colby capitalized. After the Mules' Jack Sullivan took two shots from right in front that were saved by Jumbo goalie Josh Sarlo, Sullivan set up Alex Bourhas for a power-play goal and 1-0 lead.

With the clock nearing four minutes remaining in the first, the Mules struck again. Sullivan (two assists) sent a long pass from his own end to Drew Burke along the right boards in Tufts' end. Burke zipped a pass across the zone to Will Molson who had a step on a Jumbo defender and put the puck past Sarlo for a 2-0 Colby advantage.

The Jumbos just couldn't get going offensively, but Sarlo kept them in the game. He made 16 saves in the first period and 17 more in the second as the score remained at 2-0 through 40 mninutes. The Jumbos' best chance of the night came on a powerplay late in the second period when Brennan Horn dropped a pass to Tyler Sedlak in the slot, but the shot was saved by Beran. With just 20 seconds left in the middle period Burke broke in alone on Sarlo, but the Jumbo netminder made a right pad save to keep the deficit at two.

Colby would get the important next goal short-handed. An errant Tufts pass was collected by Carter Breitenfeldt in the neutral zone and he went in alone on Sarlo and wristed a shot into the left side of the cage at 3:40 of the third.

The Mules would add a goal by Jake Klein assisted by Quinn Doyle with 3:51 remaining in regulation for the 4-0 final.

Colby finished with a wide 48-13 advantage in shots, as Sarlo made 44 saves in the Jumbo net. Andrew Maynard blocked three shots for Tufts and Mason Kohn won 12 of his 20 face-offs.

Beran's shutout was the first of his career at Colby and came on 13 saves. Michael Morrissey with 11 wins on 17 draws topped the visitors in that category.

The Jumbos will finish their first semester of action on Saturday afternoon with a NESCAC contest against Bowdoin College at Valley Forum. The puck drops at 4 PM.
