Hockey Loses Overtime Battle 3-2 Against Bowdoin

Box Score

MALDEN – The Tufts University men's hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to the Bowdoin College Polar Bears Saturday afternoon at Valley Forum.

Tufts scored the first two goals of the game, but the Polar Bears stormed back, with Chris Brown scoring the overtime goal just over three minutes into the period.

The Jumbos' first goal came in the ninth minute of the game, after the two teams were going back-and-forth from the start. Sophomore defenseman Cam Newton (pictured) controlled a pass from freshman Tyler Sedlak on the right side of the goal and sent a wrist shot towards the net that got through everyone and into the back of the net to make the score 1-0 in favor of Tufts. Not long after, the Jumbos scored a power play goal just under 14 minutes into the game when senior forward Angus Scott grabbed a loose puck, closed in on the goal and sent a shot past Bowdoin goalie Alex Kozic.

The Polar Bears responded with just a minute and a half left in the period with a power play goal from Will Forrest with just a second left in the power play. Andy Stoneman and Jack Gilligan assisted the goal for Bowdoin as the game went into the second period with a 2-1 score.

The second period was a defensive and goalie battle, with no goals scored. There were definitely chances for both teams in the period with the first coming from the Jumbos just under four minutes into the period. Tufts senior captain Nick Schultze had a breakaway and fired a shot that was saved by Kozic. Schultze collected the rebound and sent a shot wide of the open net. About two minutes later, Tufts sophomore goalie Ryan Welch helped the Jumbos keep their lead with a great save on a hard shot by Bowdoin's Jesse Lycan. Lycan followed it up with another shot on net after collecting the rebound and Welch stepped up and made another save before Tufts cleared the puck out of their zone. Bowdoin had a couple two-on-one opportunities during the period that they could not finish, sending the game to the third period with the same 2-1 score.

Tufts held off the Polar Bears for half of the third period before Bowdoin tied the game up on freshman Jack Gilligan's first collegiate goal. Gilligan received a pass from Luke Wheeler and fired a wrist shot from the blue line that found its way into the net to make it a 2-2 game. Neither team would score for the rest of the third as the game went to overtime.

Tufts got a penalty late in the third period, causing them to start the overtime session with three players on the ice compared to Bowdoin's four. The Polar Bears took plenty of shots during this time, but the Tufts defense, along with Welch, held them off. The game then went to three-on-three and the teams went back-and-forth for about a minute. On the game-winning goal, Bowdoin's Brown found himself with the puck directly in front of the net and fired a shot that went through Welch's legs and into the goal, giving Bowdoin the 3-2 victory just over three minutes into the overtime period.

Bowdoin led the game in shots with 40 compared to Tufts' 25. The Polar bears went one for three on the power play while Tufts finished one for four. Welch helped keep the Jumbos in the game, making 37 saves while Kozic finished with 25 for Bowdoin, helping lead them to their first win of the season.

The Jumbos will not play again for a just under a month, with their next game coming on Saturday, January 8 in the first round of the Boston Landing Tournament against Nichols College at Warrior Ice Arena in Boston.
