Cano's Offensive Output Helps Men's Soccer Top Brandeis 4-0

Box Score

Mati Cano WALTHAM - Senior Mati Cano (pictured) scored two goals and added an assist as the top-ranked Tufts University men's soccer team won 4-0 at local non-conference rival Brandeis University on Saturday.

In the first five minutes, the Jumbos (4-0) took command as midfielder Derek Enge intercepted a bad pass from Brandeis and sent a ball over the top to Cano. He dribbled past his defenders along the right-hand side of the field and struck the ball into the upper left corner to put the Jumbos up 1-0.

Tufts built a cushion for themselves when Cano again came down the right-hand side of the field to beat a defender and take a shot that was parried by goalie Aiden Guthro, but pinballed to the foot of midfielder Travis Van Brewer. He tucked the ball into the far corner from the left side putting Tufts up by two in the 21st minute.

The final chance of the half came from Jumbo midfielder Woovin Shin who had a clean look on goal, but his header went over the bar.

In the 47th minute, Tufts forward Sean Traynor made a sharp run down the left side after a Brandeis give-away to unselfishly roll the ball to a surging Cano who put it into the back of the net for his second goal of the day. The final goal for Tufts came from forward Mikey Brady in the 82nd minute. Midfielder Ethan Feigin found Brady inside the box for a clean finish, capping off a strong performance by the Jumbos.

In a complete offensive showing, Tufts totaled 13 shots and eight corners, though they committed 16 fouls along their road to victory. Cano now has three goals and two assists for eight points in four games.

The home team struggled to finish their scoring opportunities while putting up 10 shots. Eric Lauta started and made four saves in goal for the Jumbos. Jacob Totz played the final five minutes and earns a share of the shutout. Aiden Guthro stopped three shots in goal for Brandeis (1-4-1). Corners finished 8-1 in Tufts' favor.

The Jumbos continue their non-conference play at Salem State on Tuesday. Brandeis plays at Wheaton College that evening.
