MEDFORD - The 17th-ranked Tufts University men's squash team scored an 8-1 victory over #21 Amherst College at Tufts Squash Center on Sunday afternoon.
It's the second win in the last three matches for Tufts against Amherst. The Jumbos improve to 5-3 and 4-1 in NESCAC today, while the Mammoths drop to 7-5 and 4-3.
The Jumbos won each of the first three matches to take the courts. Vivaan Jaikishan got Tufts started with a strong 11-5, 12-10, 12-0 win in the fifth position. Shloke Sahay followed by breaking a 1-1 tie to win 11-5, 10-12, 11-7, 11-9 in the ninth match. In the third position, where Tufts took a 3-0 lead, Kunal Valia won the first two games before Adam Lichtmacher from Amherst evened the contest at 2-2. Valia then won the fifth to take the match 11-6, 11-7, 5-11, 7-11, 11-7.
Amherst's only victory came at #6 where Charlie Sutherby won 9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8. However, the Jumbos responded with the next two wins to earn the match. Oliver Eielson won at #8 11-2, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8. Second player Kerwin Teh (pictured) cliched the victory for Tufts in five games, coming back from down 2-1 to win 11-8, 7-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-7.
The Jumbos would sweep the final three matches for the 8-1 score. Sanjeev Jeyabalan won at #4 13-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8. The seventh match went to Tufts' Marco Rodriguez 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 11-3. And at #1, Jumbo Harry Charlton won in three straight over Amherst's Robinson Armour 11-8, 11-5, 11-7.
Tufts will next be in action on Saturday at Bowdoin College.
