Hockey Falls 4-3 to Albertus Magnus in Codfish Bowl OT Tilt

BOSTON, MA (December 29, 2022) - The Tufts University hockey team battled back from a 3-0 deficit to force overtime before losing 4-3 to Albertus Magnus College (AMC) in the opening round of the Codfish Bowl hosted by the University of Massachusetts Boston on Thursday.

Two goals by Jumbo senior Mason Kohn in the second period and then a power-play strike by junior Sam Miller in the third tied the game at 3-3 after the Falcons had scored three first-period goals. Then during 3-on-3 overtime play, AMC's Tim Manning scored the game-winner with 46 seconds on the clock.

Tufts (3-6-1) will play Fitchburg - who lost 4-1 to the host Beacons in the other first-round contest - in the consolation game Friday at 1:30 pm. Albertus Magnus (10-3), which is receiving votes in the US College Hockey online poll, plays UMass Boston in the tournament final on Friday at 4:30 pm.

In their first action since December 10, the Jumbos surrendered three first-period goals to the Falcons. JJ Berdal scored on the first shot of the game 25 seconds in. Caden Pattison made it 2-0 at 11:47, then Bailey Kirwin extended the lead to 3-0 with just under five minutes left in the first.

Kohn started Tufts' comeback five minutes into the middle stanza. Freshman Philippe Lamarre began the play by sending a pass off the glass up to classmate Max Resnick, who skated across the zone and put a shot on goal. The rebound went left where Kohn was able to backhand it in from a tough angle making it 3-1.

With under four minutes remaining in the second, Kohn scored again. Junior Jack Hughes stole the puck at center ice and gave it to Kohn at the blue line. He shook off a defender and used another as a screen to put a shot past AMC goalie Logan Bateman for a 3-2 score.

Miller's equalizer came at 13:48 of the third. Starting a power-play, Kohn won a face-off in the Falcon end. Sophomore Tyler Sedlak fired a one-timer that was blocked, but he retrieved the rebound. Skating to the middle of the ice, he created space for a pass to Miller who snapped one by Bateman tying the game.

The Jumbos would go into overtime short-handed following a penalty at the end of regulation. However, freshman goalie Gus Bylin made three saves and Tufts killed off the man-advantage. However, in the final minute of OT, AMC's Charles Risk skated into the Tufts zone and dropped a pass to Sam Anderson. His shot was saved by Bylin, but Manning tucked in the rebound to win it.

Tufts out-shot Albertus Magnus 50-35, but Bateman came up with 47 saves for the victory. Bylin stopped 31 shots in the Tufts net.
