HARTFORD - The Amherst College men's squash team defeated Tufts University 7-2 in the fifth-place match at the 2022 NESCAC Championship Sunday morning at Trinity College.
The Jumbos finish as the sixth-place team, matching their best showing in the conference. Tufts was sixth in 2019, 2008 and 2007.
After Amherst took a 2-0 lead in the first wave of matches, Tufts' Shloke Sahay (pictured) won the #8 match 11-8, 11-4, 11-8 to close the margin to 2-1. However, Amherst would run off five consecutive victories to seal the match.
The clinching win for the Mammoths came at #2, where Adam Lichtmacher defeated Tufts' Kerwin Teh 11-7, 12-10, 11-5. The fifth match was the most compelling, with Abhimanyu Gupta from Amherst outlasting Tufts' Dillon O'Shea 8-11, 11-7, 11-2, 8-11, 11-8.
Jumbo sophomore Sam Charlton added a victory for Tufts at #9 with a 4-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9 line score against Andrew Leung.
Tufts, who had defeated Amherst 8-1 earlier in the season, was without #1 player Harry Charlton and #4 starter Sanjeev Jeyabalan today.
The Jumbos (6-6) play a make-up game at home against MIT on Thursday.
