Williams Holds Off Hockey 2-1 For NESCAC Victory

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (January 27, 2023) - Tufts University freshman Max Resnick scored with 54 seconds left in the third period, but host Williams College was able to close out a 2-1 win over the Jumbos in a key NESCAC men's hockey game Friday night at Lansing Chapman Rink.

The Jumbos and Ephs had entered the evening tied for seventh place in NESCAC, but Williams (5-11-1, 3-7-1) sweeps the season series with tonight's victory and a 4-1 final in Malden back in December. Tufts falls to 5-11-1 and 2-8-1 in the league.

Down 2-0 and with their goalie pulled, the Jumbos had a face-off win by Mason Kohn. A blast from outside the top of the left circle by Tyler Sedlak was saved by Williams goalie Evan Ruschil, but Resnick was in front to poke it home.

After bringing goalie Peyton Durand back in for the ensuing face-off, the Jumbos weren't able to get him off again until 20 seconds remained and the Ephs ran out the clock to earn the win.

The game had entered the third period scoreless, but Williams' Mac Carso assisted the game's first goal at 6:05 of the third and then score the eventual game-winner at 15:05. On the first goal Carso gloved the rebound of a shot behind the net and brought it out to the outside edge of the left circle. His shot was saved by Durand, but the puck squirted loose over to Jacob Monroe at the right post and he was able to tuck it in. The second Eph goal came right after a Jumbo power-play expired with Carso getting around a Tufts defenseman and snapping a shot in for a 2-0 score.

Ruschil, who finished the night with 30 saves, helped the Ephs kill two Tufts power plays in the third. He had 10 saves in the final period. Sedlak hit the post twice in the third for Tufts. Durand finished with 13 of his 31 saves in the third period for Tufts.

A scoreless first period saw 10 saves by each of the goalies, and then 10 more by Ruschil and eight by Durand as the second period also ended at 0-0.

Shots finished at 33-31 in favor of the Ephs overall. Neither team scored on a pair of power-play chances.
