HARTFORD, CT (February 25, 2023) -- The Tufts University men's squash team rallied to make the score 4-3 against No. 11 Chatham University, but the No. 15 Jumbos wouldn't be able to complete the comeback as they fell 6-3 in the consolation bracket of the Hoehn Cup at the 2023 College Squash Association (CSA) Championships Saturday.
The Jumbos will now take on the loser of the University of Rochester and Franklin & Marshall College Sunday at 8:30 a.m. at Wesleyan College in the 7/8 contest of the Hoehn Cup. The Jumbos started the morning strong as it picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 7 during the first wave of action.
Sanjeev Jeyabalan rallied from down a game to earn a hard-fought, 61-minute marathon win over Owais Rasheed with scores of 11-6, 1-11, 9-11, 11-8 and 11-9 at No. 5. At the No. 7 position,
Jared Chin continued his solid play of late with a 3-1 win over Lucas Oliveira, earning a 13-11, 7-11, 11-6 and 11-8 win. The final match of the first wave was at No. 1, another fantastic match that went five games. Tufts'
Harry Charlton won the first and fourth games, but was topped 11-4 in the final game to fall 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4.
In the second wave, Chatham would take control as it swept the three matches at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 8. Muhammad Hassaan Raza bested
Kunal Valia 11-5, 11-5 and 11-4 at No. 2, while
Youssef Ezzo fell to Jared Nalliah 12-10, 11-8 and 11-3.
At No. 8,
Vivaan Jaikishan was topped by Navaneeth Prabhu 11-6, 12-10 and 11-6 to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Cougars. The Jumbos kept hope alive with a 3-0 win at No. 9 in the last wave by
Rohan Valia, earning a three-game win with scores of 11-5, 11-4 and 11-8 over Alejandro Cruz.
The clinching point though would come at No. 6, as
Oliver Eielson fell in four games for Agustin Carranza 11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8. The final match to finish would come at No. 3, as
Kerwin Teh was outlasted 11-7, 12-10, 11-7 by Sebastian Vaca Sanchez.
