No. 4 Men's Tennis Dispatches Of No. 6 Williams College, 7-2

MEDFORD, MA (March 12, 2023) -- The No. 4 Tufts University men's tennis squad picked up another crucial New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory Sunday, as the Jumbos swept doubles on the way to a 7-2 win over No. 6 Williams College in action from Gantcher Field House.

The Jumbos (3-0, 3-0 NESCAC) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in doubles, as the pair of Josh Belandres and Rishabh Sharda coasted to an 8-2 win at the No. 2 position. The duo is 3-0 on the season. Tufts doubled its lead to 2-0 with a victory at No. 3, as Jack Moldenhauer and Alex Ganchev knocked off Simon Volkema and Jason Shuler 8-5 to stay unbeaten this spring.

At the No. 1 doubles position, Derin Acaroglu and Vuk Vuksanovic won their second match of the weekend with an 8-6 win over Matt Kandel and Chase Cohen to clinch the sweep of doubles action.

The transition to singles continued as Javier Gonzalez made quick work of Volkema at No. 5 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-1 to push Tufts to within a team point of clinching the match. That victory would come on the next decision, as Acaroglu recorded a straight-set victory over Shawn Berdia 6-1, 6-2 to secure the team victory. Acaroglu stayed perfect for the spring in singles, as he moved to 3-0 so far.

Ganchev would finish up next with his second win of the afternoon, as he topped Shuler 6-2, 6-4 for his second straight victory in singles this spring. Chase Cohen of Williams would get the Ephs (3-1, 2-1 NESCAC) on the board as he came from behind for a 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, while his teammate Kandel topped Vuksanovic 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles as well.

The last decision was at No. 6 singles, where Belandres picked up a straight set victory over Andrew Chong 6-1, 6-2. The victory for the Jumbos over Williams was the second straight after dropping the previous seven to the Ephs, and just third victory over Williams since 1989.

The Jumbos will be off until they head west for Spring Break, playing five matches out in California kicked off with a neutral site match-up with No. 11 Johns Hopkins University in Claremont, CA on Monday, March 20 at 10:00 a.m. local time.
