WILLIAMSTOWN, MA (April 15, 2023) - The eighth-ranked Tufts University softball team remained undefeated top NESCAC at 8-0 and improved to 24-2 overall with a double-header sweep at Williams College on Saturday. The scores were 4-3 and 7-2.
The Jumbos scored four runs in third inning of game one and made it stand for the win. Then in game two they broke a 1-1 tie by scoring six times in the fourth through sixth innings to pull away for the victory.
Seniors
Josie Steinberg and
Rachel Moore had back-to-back two-run hits in third inning of game one - Steinberg's a single and Moore's a double. The Jumbos scored the runs with two outs after
Bela Jimenez and
Michelle Adelman singled earlier in the inning.
Tufts starter
Sophia DiCocco didn't give up a hit until there were two outs in the third. However, Williams singles by Sydney Fleming and Bailey Burger-Moore in the fourth set the table for a two-run single by Ronni Ramos making it 4-2.
Eph starter Sadie Leonard would keep Tufts at four runs, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth. Burger-Moore would homer in the bottom of the sixth, but freshman reliever
Emilie Doty would finish off the victory for the Jumbos. She gave up just the home run in 3.1 innings of work.
Jimenez, Steinberg and Moore had two hits each for Tufts, who finished the opener with eight. DiCocco went 3.1 innings allowing four hits and two runs. Leonard (7 IP, 8 H, 4 R) took the loss for the Ephs, while Burger-Moore finished 2 for 3 with two runs and an rbi.
Kaitlyn Perucci was 2 for 4 with three rbis and
Emma Jacobson finished 3 for 4 with a run and an rbi for the Jumbos in game two. Perucci's double scored Adelman who walked for Tufts in the first.
The Jumbos would make five errors in the game, and one of them led to Williams' first run in the second. Burger-Moore reached on a Jumbo miscue and later scored on a base hit by Adhya Tandon.
Jacobson's rbi double got a three-run fourth started for the Jumbos.
Kat Yuzefpolsky singled home a run and then helped Jacobson score by getting into a rundown while attempting to steal second. Similarly in the fifth, Steinberg doubled down the right field line, went to third on a single by Moore and then scored on an Eph error while Moore stole second. Perucci's two-run double then made it 7-1 in the sixth.
Tufts starter
Sky Johnson did not allow an earned run in her six innings while giving up five hits. Doty came on in relief again for the seventh and Williams scored on a hit by pitch, two singles and a ground out rbi by Fleming.
Elyse Chan gave up 11 hits and the seven runs (four earned) for Williams in the loss, while Kelly McGuigan finished with two hits.
The Jumbos have now won five of their last six games against the Ephs dating back to 2019.
Tufts treks up to Middlebury College for another NESCAC double-header tomorrow.
