SOMERVILLE, MA (April 22, 2023) -- The No. 2 Tufts University men's tennis team continued its unbeaten streak this spring season on Saturday, knocking off No. 27 Wesleyan College 8-1 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play from the South Courts.
Tufts started the afternoon with a clean sweep in doubles action, as
Vuk Vuksanovic and
Derin Acaroglu won their fifth win in a row as they defeated Ben Mitchell and JT Bilski, 8-5.
Josh Belandres and
Rishabh Sharda moved to 14-2 this spring with another victory, knocking off Harry Collomb and Chase Kasday 8-2 at the No. 2 position. The final doubles match was another Jumbo victory as
Alex Ganchev and
Jack Moldenhauer won their eighth doubles match in a row, defeating Tai MacDonald and Max Lustgarten 8-6.
The Cardinals got on the board first in singles, as Kasday defeated Belandres at the No. 5 position, 6-3, 6-3, Tufts would controll action in the rest of the singles portion of the match Saturday, as Vuksanovic topped Bilski 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 . Sharda scored the winning point in the match as picked up a straight set victory over Mitchell, 6-2, 6-1. Ganchev is now 10-5 on the season in singles matches and has won five matches in a row.
Javier Gonzalez continued the Jumbos domination at the as he bested MacDonald at the No. 4 position in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 while Ganchev is now 9-1 at the No. 3 position after defeating Collomb 6-1, 6-4. At No. 6 Lanchie Macintosh was victorious over Harry Portnoy in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
With the victory, 12 of Tufts' wins this spring have come over ITA ranked opponents, as Wesleyan was No. 27 in the most recent rankings.
Tufts will be back in action this Tuesday, April 25
th as they host MIT at 4 P.M. on the South Courts in nonconference action. Following that they will turn to the NESAC Tournament Quarterfinals as they face Wesleyan at either Middlebury College or Williams College. The time is TBD.
