Softball Opens NCAA Play With 9-3 Victory Over Husson

Tufts Faces Moravian Next on Friday at 11:00 AM

MEDFORD, MA (May 18, 2023) – Senior left fielder Kat Yuzefpolsky had two hits, two runs batted in and scored once to lead the seventh-ranked Tufts University softball team to a 9-3 victory over Husson University in Game 2 of the NCAA Regional at Spicer Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Jumbos (38-4) advance to face Moravian University (33-8) in the winner's bracket Game 3 of the tournament tomorrow at 11:00 AM. The Greyhounds defeated Cabrini University 8-4 in Game 1 of the Regional earlier on Friday.

Senior catcher Emma Jacobson and senior shortstop Josie Steinberg also had two hits for Tufts, who finished with 12 overall. Eight Jumbos scored runs in the game and seven had rbis.

Senior CF Katie Raymond had two hits for Husson (30-13-1), who will play Cabrini in Game 4 of the Regional on Friday at 1:30 PM.

Tufts starter Sophia DiCocco retired the first nine batters she faced. Husson's first hit came in the fourth when Raymond led off with a single.

The Jumbos had a 6-0 lead at the time. Steinberg singled, stole second and scored on first-year RF Kaitlyn Perucci's base hit in the first. Senior CF Michelle Adelman (two run scored) singled, took third on a base hit by Jacobson and scored on Yuzefpolsky's single in the second. An rbi double by first-year 1B Haley Leimbach and a run-scoring triple by graduate DP Nicole Russo led a four-run third inning for the Jumbos.

Senior 3B Rachel Moore's seventh home run of the season with two outs in the fourth then gave Tufts a 7-0 lead.

The Eagles would steer clear of a possible eight-run defeat with two in the fifth. Sophomore Tatyanna Biamby had a pinch-hit rbi single followed by another rbi single from Raymond making it 7-2.

Husson closed to within 7-3 on a solo home run by junior pinch-hitter Julia Gregoire in the sixth. However, Tufts tacked on two in the bottom of the frame with a lead-off single from Yuzefpolsky, first-year pinch-hitter Lauryn Horita's double, an rbi single from Steinberg and a sac fly by Perucci (two rbis).

DiCocco improved to 14-2 in the circle allowing five hits and two runs with three K's and no walks in five innings. Sophomore Sky Johnson pitched the final two innings for Tufts giving up two hits and a run.

Husson 20-game winner McKenna Smith surrendered 12 hits and nine runs in six innings to take the loss.
