MEDFORD, MA (April 10, 2024) – Senior
Sophia DiCocco fired a one-hit shutout in leading the 16th-ranked Tufts University softball team to a 6-0 victory over Endicott College on Wednesday afternoon at Spicer Field.
DiCocco allowed just a single through the left side of the infield by Endicott's Paige Berdos with two outs in the top of the third. Other than that, DiCocco was perfect as she did not walk anyone while striking out three.
Tufts improved to 19-4 with the win, which started a seven-game home-stand for the Jumbos. Endicott fell to 12-4. It's the second win of the season for the Jumbos over the Gulls, including a 3-0 final in Florida on March 19.
The Jumbos got to Gulls starter Jaylin Couto for the game's first run in the bottom of the second. First-year DP
Heaven Oliva dropped a single inside the left-field line, then sophomore Hayley Leimbach doubled to left-center scoring Oliva. Endicott center fielder Christina Nowicki got to the ball, but had it glance off her glove while in a full sprint and it was ruled a hit.
Tufts rallied for three runs in the third frame making it 4-0. Consecutive base hits by
Michelle Adelman,
Rachel Moore and
Josie Steinberg (rbi) brought in the first run. The next two runs scored during an Endicott error, with
Kaitlyn Perucci picking up an rbi on one of the runs.
The Jumbos then scored single runs in the fifth and sixth, with Oliva hitting an rbi single and a double by Moore scoring the final run, respectively.
Steinberg (3 for 4, run, rbi), Moore (2 for 4, run, rbi), Oliva (2 for 3, run, rbi) and Adelman (2 for 4, run) led Tufts' 11-hit attack.
Couto took the loss, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) in three innings. Reliever Analise Grady gave up five hits and two runs (one earned) in her three innings.
Tufts will host Trinity College for a NESCAC double-header at Spicer on Saturday.
