Women's Rowing Wins Every Race Against Top-Ranked Visitors

MEDFORD, MA (April 13, 2024) - In a day featuring outstanding success by the second-ranked Tufts University women's rowing team, the Jumbos swept all eight of their races against #1 Wesleyan University, #4 Bates College and #5 Wellesley College on Saturday at Malden River.

Tufts' first varsity started the day by defeating Bates by over seven seconds with a 6:46.03 time to 6:53.53 by the Bobcats. In the series including Wesleyan and Wellesley, the Jumbos then faced Wesleyan in the grand final and posted a five-second win of 6:48.33 to 6:53.53. The Tufts 1V8 today was coxswain Hannah Jiang, Rose Tinkjian, Janna Moore, Shira Roberts, Emma Mahoney, Summer Maxwell, Samara Haynes, Karen Dooley and Emma Lyle.

The Jumbos followed suit in the second varsity races, where coxswain Maddie Rosato with Margot Durfee, Reilly Uiterwyk, Julia Zipoli, Hadley Keefe, Lucy Howell, Aoife Schmitt, Amanda Downing, Sydney Barr defeated Bates and Wesleyan. A five-second victory over Bates initially saw the Jumbos row 7:03.41 to 7:08.55 by Bates. They then powered their way to a near 10 second victory against Wesleyan (7:01.74 to 7:11.29).

In the races against Bates, Wellesley and Wesleyan, the third varsity then made it a clean sweep for Tufts. They were way ahead of Bates in the semifinal with a 7:12.36 mark to the Bobcats' 7:46.14 time. They then did the same to Wellesley, with Tufts crossing the finish line for the grand final in a 7:17.25 time to 7:50.20 by the Blue. Tufts' 3V8 line-up was coxswain Shriyaa Srihari, Lecia Sun, Natalie Graham, Alicia Coble, Brooke Thompson, Molly Heeney, Sophie Cumming, Sophia Brackett and Ashna Garikapati.

The Jumbo fourth and fifth varsities went up against Wellesley and earned substantial wins. The 4V8 of coxswain Sophie Novitsky, Ashley Brzezenski, Zenani Himlin-Mayekiso, Grace Hamilton, Alex Timoney, Sheelyn Pfarr, Sanjana Rao, Stella Shen and Cecelia Wilson defeated Wellesley's fourth boat 7:21.36 to 7:51.84. The Jumbo 5V8 - coxswain Alex Boyer, Eva Swei, Lyra Bornholdt-Collins, Fiona Smirl, Hannah Schiller, Nosara Maxwell, Claire Carson, Alice Wall and Savannah Fredriksen - later finished over 40 second in front of the Wellesley 4V8 (7:33.10 to 8:14.34).

Tufts will next compete for the annual Brown Cup in 1V8 races and more against WPI on Sunday, April 21 at Lake Quinsigamond.
