MEDFORD, MA (April 17, 2024) – The Tufts University coed sailing team received an at-large berth into the Open Team Race National Championship last night.
A five-member selection committee announced 10 at-large teams that will join six conference champions at the national team race regatta April 25-27 on the Charles River. MIT will be the host school out of the Walter C. Wood Sailing Pavilion.
The teams winning conference titles to receive automatic berths into Nationals were Charleston, Georgetown, Stanford, Tulane, Wisconsin and Yale. Joining Tufts as at-large selections were Boston College, Brown, Coast Guard, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Navy, Roger Williams and St. Mary's (Md.).
The National Championship Selection Committee awarded the at-large berths based on team performances throughout the spring season. In the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association – the strongest conference in the nation – Tufts was ninth at the Team Race Championship. They had a third at the Friis Trophy Team Race hosted by Roger Williams earlier in the year.
Expected to represent the Jumbos at Nationals are senior
Trevor Davis, sophomore
Ben Mueller and freshman
Wyatt Bischoff as skippers, and senior
Celia Byrne and juniors William Eykyn,
Leo Terry,
Rees Tindall and
Cindy Wang as crews.
The Jumbos were 13th at the team race national regatta last year, with Davis and Mueller, and Byrne,
Amelia Carlson, Eykyn and Tindall all contributing.
Byrne is a four-year veteran of the Team Racing Nationals. She and Carlson also competed when Tufts was 13th in 2022. Byrne also crewed for the Jumbos in 2021 when Tufts was seventh during a season shortened due to COVID-19.
In its history Tufts has won six team racing national titles, but not since 1996.
