Softball Earns 27th Victory With 12-0 Final at Brandeis University

WALTHAM, MA (April 24, 2024) - The 14th-ranked Tufts University softball team had 15 hits in five innings, while senior pitcher Sophia DiCocco allowed just one as the Jumbos posted a 12-0 victory in non-conference play at Brandeis University on Wednesday afternoon.

Tufts (27-5) had crooked numbers all through its box score as junior Keriann Slayton was 3 for 4 with two runs, Josie Steinberg finished 2 for 3 with three rbis, Heaven Oliva went 2 for 2 with two runs and two rbis and Haley Leimbach was 2 for 2 with three runs. Rachel Moore drove home three runs and Bela Jimenez had two rbis.

Meanwhile, DiCocco did not allow a hit until the fourth inning when Brandeis senior Haley Nash singled to left with two outs. DiCocco allowed just the hit and no runs with seven strikeouts and no walks in five innings. The win was her 10th of the season and the shutout lowered her era to a 0.69 mark.

Tufts' Lauryn Horita hit her seventh home run of the season in the top of the first to start the Jumbos' attack.

The visitors would then score four runs in the second inning, with Steinberg's two-run single up the middle capping the frame. Michelle Adelman took away a Judges' hit with a nice sliding catch in shallow center field on a ball hit by Anna Kolb for the second out in the bottom of the second. Then in a five-run third inning, a two-run double by Oliva was the highlight as Tufts built its margin to 10-0.

The Jumbos would add two in the top of the fourth with runs scoring on Moore's fielder's choice and Steinberg's single, both for their third rbis of the game.

Brandeis senior pitcher Alex Cohen allowed nine hits and nine runs in two innings for the loss. The Judges dropped to 13-19 overall.

Tufts will return to NESCAC action on Saturday with a trip to Colby College in Waterville, Maine for a pair of games beginning at 2 PM.
