SWARTHMORE, PA (May 11, 2024) -- The No. 6 Tufts University men's tennis team had no problem in its first match of the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament, dispatching of No. 29 Christopher Newport University 5-0 in action from Faulkner Courts on the campus of Swarthmore College.
The Jumbos (17-6) have now won 12 of the last 14 matches overall after Saturday's 5-0 win, and will take on host and No. 8 Swarthmore Sunday at noon on Faulkner Courts for a shot at the NCAA Quarterfinals next week at Washington University of St. Louis.
On Saturday afternoon, Tufts wasted no times sweeping doubles as the three matches were all final after just 35 minutes.
Corey Marley and
Sacha Maes dropped just one game to Alex Seretis and Ahun Vodela to put the Jumbos ahead 1-0, and minutes later
Derin Acaroglu and
Lachie Macintosh earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. The win for the Tufts' pair was their 14th of the season and eighth in the last 10.
The final doubles' match would put the Jumbos up 3-0 as
Alex Ganchev and
Vuk Vuksanovic posted an 8-3 win at the No. 1 position over Nesh Kumaresan and Vincent Truong. Ganchev and Vuksanovic is now 11-6 on the campaign.
Once singles' action started, sophomore
Javier Gonzalez posted a team-leading 18th win at No. 2 singles as he knocked off Edvard Porsmyr Hansen 6-2, 6-0. The clinching win came at No. 6 singles, as sophomore
Andrej Djokic posted his 11th consecutive win on the year as he run his record to 15-4 with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Tufts was up a set in the other four matches when the match was abandoned after the clinching point.
The Jumbos will now try to make their third straight trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals Sunday, taking on Swarthmore who defeated North Carolina Wesleyan 5-2 Saturday afternoon.
