MIDDLETOWN, CT (May 3, 2024) -- The No. 18 Tufts University women's tennis squad, seeded fifth in the 2024 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament, hung around with No. 10 and fourth-seed Williams College but in the end the Ephs earned a 5-2 win at John Wood Memorial Courts in the quarterfinal round Friday at Wesleyan University.
Williams will now play undefeated and top seed Wesleyan (16-0) Saturday, while Middlebury College and Amherst College will play in the other NESCAC semifinal.
Tufts fell behind 2-1 after doubles, as first-year
Natalie Hu and sophomore
Stephanie Woodbury were able to secure an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Williams took a 3-1 lead as Ananya Aggarwal picked up a straight set win over
Sophie Wax at No. 4 singles. First-year
Natalie Hu would get the Jumbos back in the match with an emphatic 6-0, 6-1 win over Mia Thomann at No. 5 singles.
At one point, Tufts looked like it would have a window to make a comeback as the Jumbos were leading in three of the final four matches being played. In the end though, Williams got wins at No. 2 and No. 1 singles to clinch the match.
Sophomore
Lucy Mitchell and Annabelle Siegel were tied at a set apiece when the match was abandoned, while
Nikki Kintiroglou and Margaux Molyneux also were unfinished at No. 6 in the third set.
The Jumbos will now wait and see if it will be chosen for the NCAA Tournament field, which will be announced on Monday afternoon at noon on NCAA.com. Tufts is currently ranked No. 6 in the Region 1 rankings.
