Jumbo Women's Basketball Falls At Colby Saturday

WATERVILLE, ME (January 11, 2025) -- The Tufts University women's basketball team couldn't slow down the potent Colby College offense Saturday afternoon, as the Jumbos dropped an 83-59 decision to the host Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play from Margaret M. Crook Center. 

Colby shot the ball well all day against the Jumbos, as the host Mules made 52.2 percent from the floor while making 43.8 percent (7-16) from three-point range. The Mules also benefited from from 33 shots from the free throw line, making 28 in the win. 

Tufts (9-6, 0-2 NESCAC) was leading early in the contest after a Sofia Gonzalez to make it 7-3, but the Mules powered back to take a 22-13 lead after the first quarter. Colby would outscore Tufts in each of the four quarters, pulling away for the victory. 

Sophomore Stella Galanes finished with a team-high nine points off the bench for Tufts, adding four rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Hannah Kelly added eight points and four rebounds, while Monet Witherspoon tallied six points and six rebounds. Gonzalez recorded six points and three rebounds, and first-year Claire Kolkhorst nailed two threes to tally six points. 

Sophomores Annie Ryan and Hope Nardone each added five points, and Caitlyn O'Boyle had a team-high six rebounds. Tufts made 20 of its 71 field goals on Saturday (28.2 percent), but was strong at the line making all 12 shots from the charity stripe. Tufts held a 33-10 edge in bench points. 

Kate Olenik finished with a game-high 22 points, adding six rebounds and five assists for Colby (6-7, 2-0 NESCAC). 

Tufts returns to Cousens Gymnasium for the first home games of 2025, hosting Williams College Friday, January 17 at 7 p.m. in more NESCAC action.
