The Jumbos were the runner-up at the East Regional last year and received an at-large berth into the NCAA national meet for the first time since 2021. The winner of the Regional race earns an automatic berth into Nationals, while other top-finishing squads are considered for at-large berths which are announced on Sunday (Nov. 16).
Tufts is ranked second behind MIT in the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association East Region poll. Bowdoin College, Brandeis University and Suffolk University round out the top five. The Jumbos are coming off a fourth-place showing at the NESCAC meet two weeks ago. They were ahead of all of the conference schools with whom they share a NCAA East Region affiliation, including Bowdoin, #7 in the Region Bates College and #8 Colby College.
The probable starters for the Jumbos on Saturday will be seniors
Liz Donahue and
Deirdre Flanagan, junior
Katya Henisz, sophomores
Zoe Margolies and
Samara McVey, and first-years
Zui Chinchalkar and
Lily Simmonds. Junior
Sonia Olson and sophomore
Phoebe Bryar will be on hand as alternates.
Donohue was the individual runner-up at last year's race to earn her second All-Region accolade (top 35). She was 12th at the NESCAC race two weeks ago for her second straight All-Conference award. Margolies was eighth at the Regional last year.
"This team has continued to grow and improve each week of the season which puts us in a great position to finish things out strong," said
Jamie Norton, Director of Cross Country and Track & Field at Tufts. "We're ready to put a great race out there at Regionals to stamp our ticket to Nationals. We have some exciting young new people racing in this environment for the first time and we look forward to seeing how they step up."
The Jumbo program has a strong history of high individual finishes at the Regional, including recently. In addition to Donahue last year, Danielle Page was the runner-up in 2019 and 2021. Anna Slager was also third in 2021, when Tufts won its lone Regional title. Brittany Bowman won the Regional race in 2016, joining Nancy Benson from 1987 as the only Jumbos to win an individual Regional championship.
The highest-finishing individuals from non-qualifying teams at the NCAA East Region Championship also receive NCAA national berths, but that's not what the Tufts team has in mind this year as they seek a second straight NCAA team berth and 13th overall. The NCAA Division III National Championship Race will be held on Saturday, November 22 at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
