Calvin Tops Jumbo Women's Hoops In Coastal Classic Opener, 71-62

BRUNSWICK, ME (December 29, 2025) -- The Tufts University women's basketball team led 33-32 at the halftime intermission, but Calvin University outscored the Jumbos by 10 in the second half to pull away for a 71-62 win in the first of two games for Tufts at the 2025 Coastal Classic at Bowdoin College inside Morrell Gymnasium. 

Tufts (6-4) was leading by one after 20 minutes of action, as senior Sarah Crossett had 11 points while first-year guard tallied 10 points as well in the first two periods. The Jumbos and Knights (6-4) were deadlocked at 17 with 3:52 to go in the first quarter, but a trifecta from junior guard Stella Galanes followed by a made free throw by Galanes pushed Tufts up by four heading to the second stanza. 

The Jumbos would continue its 10-point run into the beginning of the second quarter, as a good lay-up by first-year Abby Congdon made it 25-17 with 8:30 to play in the first half. Calvin rallied back to tie the game at 29 after a three-point play by Chloe Wiegers, and regained the lead at 30-29 after a freebie by Ashley Raredon. A driving lay-up by Annie Aspesi followed by two Lozner free throws gave the Jumbos a one-point lead heading into the locker room. 

The third quarter would not be kind to the Jumbos, who went cold offensively while the Knights' shooting started to connect. Calvin scored the first eight points of the third quarter, as Tufts wouldn't score until the 5:20 mark of the frame on a bucket by Lozner to make it 40-35. Calvin's Gabby Halliwell hit back-to-back threes and a bucket from Anna Fernandez gave the Knights a 10-point edge at 48-38 with 2:25 left in the third. Congdon would pull Tufts to within eight on a three-point play just before the end of the third to make it a 51-43 score going ot the fourth. 

Calvin would control the early going in the final stanza, growing its lead up to 17 midway through the fourth in rolling to the win. 

Lozner tied her career high for points in a game on Monday with 21, going 7-of-10 from the floor while making all six of her free throw attempts. Congdon added 11 points and three steals to the ledger, going 4-of-7 offensively, and Crossett tallied 11 points and five rebounds for the contest. 

Galanes came off the bench to finish with nine points, and Abi Stone had five points in limited action as a reserve. Aspesi tallied seven rebounds to lead all Jumbos on the glass, though Tufts was outrebounded 37-27 for the game. The Jumbos assisted on only five of their 22 made buckets as well. 

Calvin was led by a game-high 23 points from Fernandez, who was 9-of-15 from the field including connecting on four of her six three-point attempts. Wiegers had 11 points, and RyAnn Rohrer tallied nine points and seven boards. The Knights hit six of their eight three-pointers in the second half, and shot 50 percent overall in the second 20 minutes of the game. 

The Knights outscored Tufts 36-26 in the paint, while adding a 10-2 edge in second-chance points. 

The Jumbos will take on Vassar College (3-4) Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the second of two contests in the Coastal Classic at Bowdoin. The match-up with be the first for head coach Meredith Mesaris against her former team, whom she coached to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of Liberty League titles in 2024 and 2025.
