Tufts Women's Tennis Suffers First Defeat of 2025 With Loss To No. 1 Chicago

GEORGETOWN, TX (March 20, 2025) --The No. 14 Tufts University women's tennis team showed resilience against the nation's top-ranked University of Chicago on Thursday, but the Jumbos ultimately fell 7-0 at Henderson Courts.

The loss was the first of the spring season for the Jumbos, who had won the first nine outings before Thursday's loss to the No. 1 Maroons.

Despite the final scoreline, Tufts put up a fight in several key matches, particularly in doubles play, where they pushed Chicago to the brink. The duo of Stephanie Woodbury and Natalie Hu nearly took the top-court battle against Chicago's nationally ranked Mikos sisters, falling in a tight 6-4 decision. Similarly, Melanie Woodbury and Rachel Cranley came up just short at No. 2 doubles, dropping a 7-5 heart breaker in a match that could have swung the momentum early.

In singles, Rachel Cranley had one of the most competitive showings of the day at No. 3, battling back in the second set before ultimately falling 6-2, 7-5. Athena Li also pushed her opponent to the wire at No. 5 singles, forcing deep rallies before coming up just short in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat.

At No. 6 singles, Natalie Hu showed her usual fight, keeping the match tight before falling 6-2, 6-4.

Tufts will take on No. 10 Trinity University of Texas Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
