Women's Tennis Sweeps Bates to Start NESCAC Play, 7-0

LEWISTON, MAINE (March 7, 2025) - The No. 15 Tufts University women's tennis team began play in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with an emphatic 7-0 win on the road at Bates College on Friday afternoon in Lewiston, Maine.

The Jumbos (5-0) were stellar throughout the day as they swept the Bobcats (1-5) with ease. Juniors Nikki Kintiroglu and Ellie Gershaw won their doubles game with a perfect 6-0 sweep over Elise Hepburn and Olivia Gidlow. Fellow juniors Rachel Cranley and Lucy Mitchell were the winners of the second doubles match, defeating Elise Hepburn and Olivia Gidlow 6-3.

Cranley also led the Jumbos in the singles as she defeated Hepburn 6-1 and 6-2. Kintiroglu also tallied her second win of the day as she defeated Lizzie Frekko 6-2 and 6-4. The number one singles featured Gershaw and Iris Westmoreland, and Gershaw maintained the momentum with a win 7-6, 6-1.

First year Melanie Woodbury played one of the tightest games of the whole match, eventually coming out victorious over Isabell Saul 6-4, 7-6. First year Athena Li was the last Jumbo to score, making it count in a big way as she defeated Ava Lyon 6-3 and 7-5.

It was an all around successful start to NESCAC play for women's tennis as they look to make some noise in the conference in 2025.

The Jumbos will have a midweek match versus M.I.T. on their home courts at 4:00 pm.
