MEDFORD, MA (April 27, 2025) - Sunday afternoon marked the last regular season match of the season for the No. 3 Tufts men's tennis team and a celebration of the team's seniors. After blanking No. 66 Colby College 7-0 yesterday, the No. 12 Amherst Mammoths were the next challengers aiming to break the Jumbos' twelve-match win-streak. Dating back to 2022, the Jumbos have convincingly won the last three match-ups against this New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival.
The Jumbos took an early 1-0 lead in the match after securing the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles match saw the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III nationally 1st ranked pairing of
Vuk Vuksanovic and
Javier Gonzalez take on the 18th ranked Mammoth duo of Ed Opie and Andreas Sillaste. Vuksanovic and Gonzalez improved to 15-2 as a pair this year with their 6-2 dismantling of the Amherst tandem.
Alex Ganchev and
Sacha Maes also won with ease at doubles No. 2 defeating Spencer Leung and Rex Harrison 6-2. No. 3 doubles was a bit of a struggle for the Bos as
Derin Acaroglu and
Stavros Mastrogamvrakis had a tight match but ultimately fell 6-3 to Albert Hu and Sujit Chepuri.
Acaroglu was the first Jumbo to finish at No. 3 singles. He struggled to find momentum early and Aldiyar Abzhan took advantage, winning the first set 6-2. The second set was a slightly different story as Acaroglu showed great fight, but eventually lost 6-3.
At No. 6 singles Mastrogamvrakis capped off his freshman year by remaining undefeated in singles. He took down Chepuri 6-3, 6-3, proving that he will be a contributor on this dominant Tufts squad for years to come.
Garv Bahl came in at No. 5 singles for the Bos and put together an impressive performance in only his sixth singles appearance of the year. He took care of business in two sets, defeating George Chaidemenos 6-4, 6-4.
In the last regular season match of his college career Vuksanovic put another dominant performance together at No. 1 singles. Sillaste became Vuksanovic's latest NESCAC victim, losing 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 as the Tufts star has yet to lose a singles match in conference action this year. Vuksanovic has left an impressive legacy during his time at Tufts which should only grow as the team competes in tournament play over the next few weeks.
Ganchev took care of business at No. 4 singles, toppling Harrison in another straight sets victory for the Bos with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph.
After playing each other in doubles, the No. 2 singles match featured Gonzalez and Opie. Gonzalez found himself down 3-0 in the first set but fought back to even the match 3-3. He broke Opie's serve and won the first set 7-5. The next set was also very competitive but Gonzalez pulled through for the Bos and took the set 6-4.
It was a great Senior Day in Medford as the team took down Amherst 6-1. The Jumbos will enter the NESCAC championships as the number one seed in Middlebury next weekend. The team has won an impressive thirteen straight matches and compiled a 10-0 record in NESCAC play.
