Women’s Tennis Cruises Past Nichols In First Round of NCAA Championships

PORTLAND, MAINE (May 9, 2025) - The No. 15 Tufts women's tennis team traveled to Bowdoin College in Maine to play the First Round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament. They faced off against the unranked Nichols College Bison, who had won their first conference title in six years, earning them a spot in the tournament. On Friday, the Jumbos knocked off Nichols 4-0 in convincing fashion.

The Bison compiled an 11-9 record this season, although in early March the Jumbos took them down with a convincing 7-0 victory.

Tufts grabbed a quick 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Sophie Wax and Natalie Hu cruised to a 6-1 win. Not long after that, Athena Li and Brooklyn Bindas finished their No. 2 doubles match, defeating Johanna Schroeder and Antonia Carrero 6-1. Last to finish were Lucy Mitchell and Nikki Kintiroglou who finished off doubles strongly with a perfect 6-0 victory versus Cora Brosch and Charis Vogler at No. 3 doubles.

The Bo's capitalized on the momentum from doubles and put together a clinical performance in singles, winning three matches to clinch their spot in the second round of the tournament. The success started with Li who was flawless at No. 2 singles, beating Carrero 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 6 singles, Freshman Nadia Khera appeared in her eighth match of the season. She dominated Brosch in the first set winning 6-0. Khera was met with a little more resistance in the second set but won it 6-2. The win today marks her fifth straight victory of the season.

Hu clinched the match for the Jumbos at No. 3 singles taking care of Pamela Gonzalez in straight sets. She won both the first and second sets with a score of 6-1. Ellie Gershaw, Wax, and Kintiroglu were all leading by a set when the victory was clinched and their matches were halted.

Today was an impressive victory for the Tufts squad as they dominated Nichols while resting both of their All-NESCAC Second Team Singles players, Melanie Woodbury and Lucy Mitchell, from singles play.

Tomorrow they will face the No. 7 MIT Engineers at 3 p.m. in Maine with the winner moving on to the NCAA Third Round of the tournament.
